Tirpitz, the largest battleship ever built in Europe, spent most of her short life resting in the shelter of Alten Fjord, northern Norway. Here she is seen at anchor as Messerschmitts of JG5 patrol overhead, while preparations are made to camouflage the mighty vessel. Her mere presence and rumours of her movement into the sea lanes had caused panic to Allied shipping and tied up significant naval forces. To counter the threat she became a prime target for repeated attacks, including midget submarines and torpedo bombers. She was finally sunk near Tromso on 12th Nov 1944 after being attacked by Lancaster's of Nos. 617 and 9 Squadrons using the 12,000lb Tallboy bombs designed by Barnes Wallis.
