Description

When the morning of September 7, 1940 dawned cloudless, RAF Fighter Command, it's resources fully stretched, prepared for another long day of air fighting. The Battle of Britain was at it's height. By mid afternoon no enemy raids had appeared, it was ominously quiet. It was 4pm before the first blips appeared on the radar screens, but within thirty minutes it was clear that the Luftwaffe was launching it's largest raid yet faced by the RAF, and it could only mean one target- London ! On the coast spotters reported huge columns of aircraft as far as the eye could see. Fighter Command scrambled all twenty one Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons based within seventy miles of London. As running fights developed between the fighters, waves of bombers emptied their bombs on London. It was to be the first raid of the Blitz . However Goring's decision to switch from attacks on airfields to England's cities was to give Fighter Command the reprieve they so desperately needed. The decision cost the Luftwaffe the Battle of Britain, halted Hitler's invasion plans, and ultimately cost Germany the War. Robert Taylor's majestic painting depicts a typical scene from that afternoon of September 7, 1940 , the sky is alive with action as Herbert Ihlefeld leads his Me109s through the bomber formations giving chase to the Hurricanes of 242 Squadron. Today will prove to be the turning point of the Battle of Britain . A majestic painting by the world's foremost aviation artist, depicting a moment from the defining day in the most significant air battle ever fought. The Print is signed by Seventeen Luftwaffe pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain , this particular print has been signed by an additional Battle of Britain Knights Cross Holder Luftwaffe pilot...
