Description

By late April 1945 most of the Third Reich had been defeated by advancing Allied Forces , and those units remaining were regrouping in Southern Germany and Austria. With American forces nearing the outskirts of Munich , on the 28 April Adolf Galland took the decision to evacuate his precious jets to Salzburg , deep in the mountains. Bad weather prevented their departure until the following morning and they only just managed to escape under the noses of the encircling American forces. From their new secluded base Galland intended battling on with the Me 262's of the JV 44 until the bitter end , but the unsuitable mountain airfields prevented this famous fighter wing from doing much to delay the inevitable. So the beautiful Alpine Meadows became the final resting place for what was potentially the most formidable fighter wing of the War. This spectacular painting by Nicolas Trudgian shows the Me 262's of JV 44 on the 29 April 1945 , as they scorch through beautiful mountain scenery towards what they hoped would be their Alpine fortress. Led by Oberstleutnant Heinz Bar , JV 44's last commander , flying his unique Me 262A-1a/u5 equipped with six 30mm cannon , the flight heads for their mountain lair. Later in the day ' Bar ' claimed a P-47 Thunderbolt bringing his total tally to sixteen kills whilst flying the Me 262 , placing him the third most successful jet fighter pilot of World Two...Signed by: the Artist Nicolas Trudgian and Oberleutnant WALTER SCHUCK , Oberst HERMAN BUCHNER and Major WERNER ROELL...priced @ Sold...To complement the purchase of your fine art print, we are now able to offer a professional Picture Framing service.
