One of Frank Wootton most captivating works , this composition portrays 3 Spitfire's of No. II Group on patrol during the preliminary stages of the Battle of Britain. The flight is still in the early "Vic" formation soon discarded for the vastly more efficient "Finger Four" still used by fighter pilots today. Against a stunningly beautiful sky the section leader is straining his eyes in search of enemy aircraft. We can't help but wonder if any of the three survived the terrible odds stacked against them. The graceful Spitfire , available in relatively small numbers , was an invaluable companion to the tough , dependable, and much more numerous Hurricane during the famous Battle which is credited with saving England from invasion. Frank Wootton captures the scene as only he could , presenting a majestic version of serenity which could transform into a fierce combat at any moment. This is a print which is very difficult to show properly on-line. It simply must be seen in full to be truly appreciated.
